Our North Lakes Sales Consultant, Gavin Peterson shares his insights on hybrid vehicles

It’s Hybrid Month here at Torque Toyota, so it was only fitting we caught up with our resident hybrid expert and North Lakes Sales Consultant, Gavin!

Red Rooster were lucky to have him as a fresh-faced teen team member, but now he’s ours. We just wish he still had the ‘party bus’ (AKA his 1984 Toyota Tarago people-mover) that he used to transport his mates around in!

Our guests and colleagues alike all flock to Gav when they’ve got a hybrid question. From the Kluger to the Yaris, he’s got the intel – and he’s been with us since 2009 so he knows Toyotas back to front. Here’s what he had to say.

Thanks for chatting with us, Gavin! So, what is it that you enjoy most about your role here as a Sales Consultant at Torque Toyota?

Gavin: Meeting people from all different backgrounds and hearing their stories. I love how every day is different, and you never know who you will meet. I’ve been lucky to meet so many interesting people over the years and assisted them with the purchase of their dream car.

There are a lot of misconceptions floating around about hybrids. What would you say is the biggest myth you have to debunk regularly?

Gavin: I’m asked numerous questions on a daily basis, but the number one would be questions about the expense of a hybrid vehicle over its standard petrol version. People are pleasantly surprised when I tell them you’re only looking at a $1,500 – $2,500 increase in price (depending on model), which you’ll make back and continue saving with reduced petrol and maintenance costs.

What are the other key benefits of hybrid vs. standard petrol vehicles?

Gavin: The hybrids really come into their own with the huge reduction in fuel economy use over the standard petrol variant. Not only are they fuel efficient, they also don’t sacrifice the power for this benefit.

What are your tips for guests looking to find the right hybrid vehicle to suit their lifestyle?

Gavin: The great news is we have a number of hybrid models to choose from, ranging in size from the Yaris all the way up to the 7-seater Kluger. I say come on in and have a chat to one of the experienced sale people in our team to see which one might suit you best.

 What’s your favourite hybrid in the current Toyota range, and why?

Gavin: Anything hybrid is a great choice, but if I could only have one, it would be the all-new Toyota Kluger. The Kluger has always been an exceptional vehicle to drive, and now as a hybrid it takes it to a whole new level. Not only do you have the luxury, but the power and maximum performance of the Toyota Hybrid system as well.

Excellent! Now, can you tell us a little more about yourself. How long have you been at Torque?

Gavin: I first started at Torque Toyota in 2009 and have now completed a couple of stints across both our dealerships, and in the new and used car departments.

Where were you working before that?

Gavin: Southside Honda, where I cut my teeth in the car industry.

What was your first job?

 Gavin: As a fresh-faced teenager, I worked at Red Rooster. I gained a lot of customer service skills there which have helped me excel in my career today.

 What was your first car?

 Gavin: A 1984 Toyota Tarago people-mover, and it was dubbed the party bus by all my mates!

What car do you drive now?

 Gavin: My daily driver is the Toyota Corolla Hatch. This vehicle is the perfect car to drive to and from work, easy to park, and cheap to maintain.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Gavin: I enjoy spending time with my family and sharing in as many experiences we can.

What’s the vibe like in the sales office. Do you all have fun?

Gavin: We try and keep it light-hearted and not take things too seriously. I’d have to say that I am very lucky working in such a tight team, as everyone’s always happy to help each other out without ever complaining.

Do you have a secret talent?

Gavin: No secret talents here, what you see is what you get.
